Science

Intent

At Bournemouth Park Academy we aim to inspire children to be curious, critical thinkers; be organised and focused; have good observational and communication skills and be able to form their own opinions. We want our children to be naturally curious about the world around them, embracing their sense of wonder about natural phenomena and to guide them into becoming enquiry-based inquisitive learners. Science lessons aim to develop children's ideas and teach them ways of working that enable them to make sense of the world in which they live. We want our children to develop an understanding of the uses and implications of science, how it has changed and shaped our lives and how vital it is to the world's future prosperity, to be able to thrive in an ever-increasing technological world.

Scientific enquiry skills are embedded in each topic the children study and these topics are revisited and developed throughout their time at school, allowing for progression in their knowledge and thinking. Topics are taught in KS1 and studied again in further detail throughout KS2, thus allowing the children to grow in their understanding, build upon their prior knowledge and increase their enthusiasm for the topics whilst embedding this procedural knowledge into the long-term memory.

We aim for the children to leave Year 6 competent in the scientific skills necessary to thrive in future learning, to be skilled in scientific enquiry and investigation and be able to communicate their ideas and knowledge clearly using a wide variety of scientific vocabulary. Children will be encouraged to ask questions, think critically and communicate their scientific knowledge and skills so that they develop their resilience to learning within science.

Implementation

Science is taught weekly in each year group. We have broken Science down into 8 key topics to ensure that are revisited in increasing detail throughout each key stage: Animals Including Humans, Living Things & Their Habitats, Plants, Materials & Their Properties, Electricity, Forces & Magnets, Rocks & Evolution, Light & Sound.

The document below shows the knowledge and skills that are covered in each year group for each topic.
