Intent
At Bournemouth Park Academy, our aim is that children develop inquisitive minds, a spirit of curiosity and a passion for life-long learning. Our Spanish curriculum aims to provide students with the foundational skills and enthusiasm for learning a second language, fostering their ability to communicate and interact in a multicultural world. By introducing students to Spanish, one of the most widely spoken languages globally, we seek to ignite a lifelong interest in language learning and global citizenship, and equip students with the linguistic and cultural competencies needed to thrive in an interconnected world. Our curriculum aims to develop their listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in an engaging and age-appropriate manner. This exposure not only enhances linguistic abilities but also deepens cultural awareness and appreciation, helping students to better understand and respect diverse perspectives and traditions, preparing them effectively for the next stage in their education.
Children at the Bournemouth Park, regardless of their background and ability, are encouraged to develop their full potential in Spanish. We strive to infuse our pupils with a love of learning Spanish within the context of the culture of the Hispanic world. We help them acquire the foundations for further foreign language learning at Key Stage 3 and a smoother transfer to Secondary School. Teaching Spanish as part of the school curriculum, we believe that all children benefit from starting to learn a foreign language at an early age and that this will ease the learning of other foreign languages later in life. By building confidence and curiosity in using a new language, students are encouraged to think creatively and critically as they apply their language skills in practical contexts.
Implementation
Spanish is taught in 40 minute lessons every week by our language teacher, Mrs Tejero. Children are given opportunities to learn through a mixture of speaking and listening activities, games, writing tasks and role play.
