Art & Design
Intent
At Bournemouth Park Academy we would like every child to have the opportunities to express their ideas, thoughts, knowledge and skills through a range of different media and experiences, using self-expression, creativity and confidence.
Through specific artist studies, our children will have opportunities to develop a sense of curiosity in learning through the respectful exploration of these artists, their media and the techniques used, consequently informing their own individual expression. Through the use of collaborative practice, pupils will confidently be able to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design, with the aim to transfer these skills to reflect critically on their own pieces of work.
We will support our pupils to develop resilience, learning how to use different skills and techniques, successfully and creatively, in order to produce finished pieces of artwork that they are proud of and that convey a personal response to a given concept.
By the end of Year 6, we strive for our pupils to have experienced a wide variety of different materials and media in order to give them a firm base from which to strengthen their abilities as they begin their journey into secondary school.
Implementation
The art curriculum at Bournemouth Park Academy plays a central role in shaping our pupils’ sense of personal, social and cultural identity, with direct links to our connected curriculum topics. Within each year group, children are enabled to develop their creative flair in the seven key areas: drawing, painting, sculpture, textiles, printing, collage, and digital media. Whilst developing these skills through a range of topic related scenarios, children are also encouraged to learn about some of the great artists, who in turn, inspire further creativity and development.
Every year group completes an art unit per term, related to their topic. The document below shows the knowledge and skills that are covered in each year group for each topic.
