PSHE, SMSC & British Values
Intent
At Bournemouth Park Academy we pride ourselves on giving pupils the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to develop into a confident, independent, compassionate and healthy citizen. PSHE & RSHE is an integral part of this and supports the physical, intellectual and emotional growth of an individual learner. We teach RSE alongside Personal, Social, Health Education as a whole-school approach to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes children need to keep themselves healthy and safe. The Jigsaw curriculum offers us a comprehensive, carefully thought-through scheme of work which brings consistency across our school and progression to our children’s learning in this vital curriculum area.
The National Curriculum states that ‘all schools should make provision for PSHE drawing on good practice’. Schools maintain a statutory obligation under the Children Act (2004) and under the Education Act (1996) to prepare children and young people for the challenges, opportunities and responsibilities of adult life. A comprehensive PSHE and RSHE programme can have a positive impact on pupils' health and wellbeing and their ability to achieve and can play a crucial part in meeting these obligations. Furthermore this also supports the “Personal Development” and “Behaviour and Attitude” aspects required under the Ofsted Inspection Framework, as well as significantly contributing to the school’s Safeguarding and Equality Duties, the Government’s British Values agenda and the SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural) development opportunities provided for our children.
Implementation
At Bournemouth Park Academy our Jigsaw lessons cover all areas of PSHE for the primary phase including statutory Relationships and Health Education. There is a theme of learning which is taught within six puzzles (units). These six units are taught across the school to ensure that the learning deepens and broadens each year:
Being Me in My World
Celebrating Difference
Dreams & Goals
Healthy Me
Relationships
Changing Me
Every child receives one hour of PSHE taught as a discreet lesson per week using the Jigsaw scheme, but British Values & SMSC are also covered within weekly assemblies, visitor workshops and topic-specific weeks or days.
The document below shows the knowledge and skills that are covered during Jigsaw lessons in each year group for each topic.
