Exploring the UK WB 27.04.20

In addition to all of the amazing creative ideas (listed above) that will keep you busy for weeks we would be learning about the United Kingdom.

Please use the internet to research the following:

  • What is a country?
  • What can we use to locate countries?
  • Where is the UK?
  • Identify the UK on a world map and then locate the four countries (Scotland, Northern Ireland, England, Wales) on a map of the UK
  • After locating the four countries the children could then beginning exploring the flags for these countries

We would like the children to understand how important it is to represent our country well by learning and possibly even performing the Queen's National Anthem (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9eK9fWUb3s) and thinking about when the children may have heard this.

By the end of the week we would like the children to be able to identify the four countries that make up the United Kingdom.  We would like the children to know that the UK is a sovereign state (because it has a King or Queen) which is made up of four countries (Scotland, Northern Ireland, England, Wales).

Traditional songs & rhymes WB 04.05.20

In addition to all of the amazing creative ideas (listed above) that will keep you busy for weeks we would also be learning how to sing with a sense of melody and rhythm to the following nursery rhymes:

London Bridge is Falling down

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUke3Hnv8o4

Oranges & Lemons

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azAZoF0rxe4

Pussy Cat, Pussy Cat

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhEzP2Noncg

Ring around the rosie

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f_hRfg-QXmU

After learning these nursery rhymes encourage the children to experiment with body sounds, such as clapping, stamping feet and using their voices to make rhythms and melodies. You could explore how altering the tempo and pitch can change the effect of the songs.

Don't forget to see if you can learn this personal Year 1 favourite all about The Great Fire of London!

Celebrating the end of the topic WB 18.05.20

It would be the final week of our topic Bright Lights, Big City before half term so this week would be lots of fun! If you haven't had a go at some of the creative work listed at the top of this page then please do.

We would begin this week by designing and then making a special crown for our tea party on the last day of term. This crown would need to stand out from the rest so you would need to think carefully about the materials (pencils/crayons/paint/paper/sequins/gems/glitter) and the colours you choose to use.

Once you have made your crown you may be able to persuade your parents/carers to host a Royal Tea party in your home or garden to celebrate the end of the topic! Don't forget to make sure you are wearing your crown.
