Guided Reading

This week we are going to be starting our brand new book called 'The Mountain of Adventure'.

Guided Reading WB 22.01.21

Remember to send your work to your teachers via Class Dojo so that they can celebrate how well you’ve done and help you if you get stuck.

Monday:

LI: To use deduction and inference skills

  1. Today we will be looking at the front page, the blurb and contents page to infer and deduce what we think the book might be about and what might happen. Go through the PPT slides 1-4. Work through the 5 questions and write down what you think on either printed copies of the PowerPoint, or on a piece of lined or plain paper.
  2. Once you have completed the questions and Independent task, find any unfamiliar vocab and, using a dictionary, and create a word bank.

Tuesday:

LI: To use recall and retrieval skills

  1. Read Chapter 1. Work through the PowerPoint questions, writing down the answers either on printed copies of the PowerPoint, or on a piece of lined or plain paper. These questions will be about what you have read in this chapter.
  2. After you have completed the 5 questions and the independent task, make up your own fact retrieval questions using ‘What, Who, When, Where, Find and Copy’?

Wednesday

LI: To explore author viewpoint and language

  1. Read Chapter 2. Work through the PowerPoint questions, writing down the answers either on printed copies of the PowerPoint, or on a piece of lined or plain paper. These questions will be about why you think the author has chosen to write in a particular way and chosen the language in this chapter. What does the author want you to feel? How has the author made you feel that way?
  2. After you have completed the 5 questions and Independent task, write about who your favourite character is so far, and why? Use evidence from the text to support your opinion.

Thursday

LI: To analyse structure and organisation

  1. Read Chapter 3. Work through the PowerPoint questions, writing down the answers either on printed copies of the PowerPoint, or on a piece of lined or plain paper.. These questions will be about how the writer has structured the text. It will also make you think about the events that have happened in this book.
  2. After you have completed the 5 questions and the Independent task, listen to the next three chapters being read to you by members of our wonderful Year 4 Team (you can access these on our Teams page) to find out what happens next!

Friday

LI: To answer questions about a text

  1. Read the Mountains information sheet. What do you already know about mountains? Work through the 5 questions, writing down the answers either on printed copies of the questions, or on a piece of lined or plain paper.
  2. After you have completed the questions and independent task, send your teacher your work from the week on Dojo.

Here is a PDF of the whole book if you would like to follow along with the chapters being read on Microsoft Teams by various members of the Year 4 Team
