Ask the children what they already know about word classes.

Explain:  Every word belongs to a word class, which summarises the ways in which it can be used in grammar.

There are four major word classes: verb, noun, adjective and adverbs.

There are five other word classes: determiners, preposition, pronoun, conjunction, interjection.

Ask the children:

  • What is a noun?

  • What is an adjective?

  • What is a verb?

  • What is an adverb?

  • Nouns are words for people, places or things.

  • Adjectives are words that describe nouns.

  • Verbs are action or state words.
