Day 1

LI: To design a Norman castle

Design brief:

  • Strong defences with a mote and baily design
  • A secure dungeon
  • Family rooms and accommodation for guards and servants
  • Symmetrical designs
  • Areas to cook, eat and entertain
  • Access to water and food in case of a siege

Use the internet to collect example Norman castle designs and create a list of materials and features that could be used. Make sure they meet the design brief.

Invent new ways to keep attackers out of the castle and Alfred’s family safe inside. What about a raging moat of fire? Or an incredibly tall keep? Let your imagination run wild and sketch out your ideas.

Draw and label a plan of your castle design. Create front, side and rear views, including measurements. What other features could you include? Drawbridge, keep or bailey?
